Canberra Midwifery Program

The Canberra Midwifery Program (CMP) was established in 1992 and provides holistic, midwifery led care with continuity of care/carer in the form of a case-loading midwife or a team of midwives who provide care from first presentation, through to two weeks postnatally.

The CMP operates from the Birth Centre at Canberra Hospital, and is available for women who:

  • Prefer to birth in a relaxed, home-like and less medicalised environment,
  • Are planning to have a natural birth, including managing pain by non pharmacological methods,
  • Are healthy and have few medical risk factors, and
  • Prefer a low intervention natural birth approach to maternity care.

During labour, your midwife will provide one-to-one care for you in the Birth Centre. Midwives work closely with the medical team and with other midwives within the unit to ensure that you and your baby receive the highest standard of care.

For women wishing to birth in the Birth Centre, it is highly recommended that you book in as soon as you confirm that you are pregnant. The program is very popular and has a waiting list for most months so it is essential that you book a place as early as possible if this is your preferred birthing option.

Bookings or enquiries can be made by contacting the Birth Centre.
